Valerian is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. It grows in wooded climates and produces sweetly scented pink or white flowers during the summer. Valerian has been used as a traditional remedy for insomnia since the time of ancient Greece and Rome.

Valerian root is widely recognized for promoting relaxation and supporting restful sleep. It appears to be most effective when taken consistently for two or more weeks.

Preclinical evidence suggests that valerian root may increase GABA production in the brain, helping calm the nervous system. Because valerian may produce central nervous system depressant effects, it should not be combined with alcohol (ethanol), benzodiazepines, barbiturates, opiates, kava, antihistamines, or other sedatives.

L-Theanine is a unique, non-protein amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. Interest in L-theanine as a dietary supplement has grown due to its potential benefits for relaxation and cognitive support.

It is well absorbed in the intestine and can cross the blood-brain barrier. Some studies suggest L-theanine may:

• Reduce stress and anxiety

Nocturn tea sachets are made from a plant-based material called polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is an inert, DNA-free material produced by breaking down starches from plant sources. Because no plant DNA remains after processing, the material is hypoallergenic and allergen-free.

PLA is not derived from petroleum and will not release harmful plasticizers into your tea. In alignment with our sourcing values, this material is intentionally selected to showcase the quality of our botanicals while providing a safe brewing experience.

PLA tea bags are designed to biodegrade in high-heat, commercial composting systems. Proper conditions require temperatures of at least 120°F and approximately 80% relative humidity sustained for about two months. The material will not break down in your cup, even if steeped for extended periods.

To further support biodegradability, Nocturn tea bags use a cotton string and a printed paper tag only. These components are attached to the PLA mesh using ultrasonic high-heat vibrational energy — no glue required.
